During the week of August 9th the school will be closed during the school day on Monday yet will be open from 12 p.m. until 9 p.m. for evening classes. The week of August 16th the school will resume normal working hours Monday thru Friday.

Graphic Design Students Continue to win Awards

South Tech Academy Graphic Design students lost their instructor Mickey Schemer this past February in an untimely death, but the students’ talents that Mickey honed continue to shine on. The Law Week Committee of the Palm Beach County Bar Association selected the winning poster by Brandon Badillo of South Tech Academy for the 2010 Law Week Poster Contest.

The committee will present Brandon with a $50 prize for supplies for his class and offer an opportunity to the school to submit a grant application for the purchase of supplies for the class. The award will be presented at the Law Week luncheon to be held at the Marriott in West Palm Beach on May 7, 2010.

Elliot Gonzalez – Another south tech success story

Elliot Gonzalez, a 2009 Automotive Technology graduate of South Tech Academy is well on his way to success. Mr. Gonzalez is currently attending the Toyota T-Ten training program at Atlantic Technical Center, located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Shortly after being accepted into this training program, Mr. Gonzalez procured employment as an apprentice technician with the Lexus dealership in West Palm Beach.

During his senior year at South Tech Academy, Mr. Gonzalez placed first in the Secondary Regional SkillsUSA Challenge competition and went on to place third at the State level competition. This year, during the 2010 Post-secondary Regional SkillsUSA Challenge competition, Mr. Gonzalez placed second and went on to place second at the State level.

Mr. Gonzalez’s instructors at Atlantic Technical Center are commending his level of dedication along with the prior education he received in the Automotive Technology Program at South Tech Academy. Mr. Thomas Keller of Atlantic Tech states, “The instruction of Mr. Timothy Brown and Mr. Robin Hellier of South Tech Academy made Atlantic Technical Center look good this year. Thanks!”

South Tech Academy applauds Mr. Gonzalez’s current achievement and wishes him a continuation of further advancements in his professional pursuits.

Medical Academy Students from Boynton Beach School fair well in National SkillsUSA Competition in Kansas City

Eleven South Tech Academy students went to Kansas City last week to represent the State of Florida in the National SkillsUSA Competition. Sthanley Joseph won the silver medal for Practical Nursing, competing against students from all over the United States. Health Knowledge Bowl team members Alan Bright, Ryan Oms, Noe Garcia and Stacy Design took 4^th Place out of 23 states. Instructor Cathy Sweeney, who was instrumental in preparing the students for the competition and accompanied them to Kansas City, said that the competition was very difficult and winning was no easy feat. She is very proud of the Medical Academy students.

Maria Ocasio Rosado – Dean of High School Students

Maria Ocasio graduated from Palm Beach Atlantic University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Organizational Management in 2002. She received her Master’s Degree in School Guidance Counseling in 2005 and a degree in Educational Leadership from Florida Atlantic University in 2007. Maria was previously employed with The School District of Palm Beach County and worked at John I. Leonard High School for 18 years. She started as a Language Facilitator, then Office Clerk, Principal’s Confidential Secretary, ESE teacher, School Guidance Counselor and Teacher on Special Assignment in the Dean’s Office.

Six years ago, Maria came to South Tech Academy, and for one year worked as

Mr. Kidd’s Confidential Secretary. During that time, she received her teaching certificate and went to John I. Leonard High School to teach Special Education.

What really impressed Maria when she came to South Tech the first time was the welcoming embrace that she felt from the entire staff. Maria says, “This school has a distinct environment which promotes learning and a desire for success from the students and I attribute this to the dedication and quality of the staff.”

Maria’s goals for the students this school year are to assist the teachers in any way so that the students are able to reach their maximum potential, not only academically, but as productive citizens in our society.

In Maria’s spare time, she likes to read, spend time with her family (especially her grandson) and enjoy some quiet time.

Dr. Jeanette L. Bovee Jimenez – Secondary Principal

Dr. Jeanette L. Bovee Jimenez, Principal for Curriculum and Instruction, at South Tech Academy has more than twenty-six years of educational experience. Jeanette is married to Hector Jimenez, and has two children, Joshua and Jonathan Harrison, both of which graduated from South Tech Academy. She is a 2009 doctoral graduate of Nova Southeastern University-Fischler School of Education and Human Services, with a concentration in Educational Leadership and was the first to graduate from the doctoral program at NSU with a minor in Charter School Education and Leadership. In her present role as Principal she oversees academic instruction, curriculum development, special education (ESE), English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), and guidance department services. Prior to her current position, Dr. Jimenez taught special education in upstate New York for a period of ten years. While in New York she obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Marist College and her Master of Science degree in Special Education from SUNY New Paltz. Once relocated in south Florida she began working for The School District of Palm Beach County, where she taught special education, worked as a Special Education Coordinator, and received her Certificate in Educational Leadership from Florida Atlantic University. Dr. Jimenez continues to hold certifications in both New York and Florida in the areas of Special Education and Educational Leadership, and is Reading Endorsed. She has been employed with South Tech Academy since 2001 as ESE Coordinator, Compliance Administrator, and Vice Principal for Curriculum and Instruction, and now, as Principal. She has plans to remain at the school as long as her services continue to make a difference in the lives of students, parents, and staff members. In her spare time Jeanette enjoys dancing, traveling, and spending time with family and friends.
